Robert Dowhan (Bob) is both the Managing Partner and a partner in the Civil Litigation and Employment Law Practice Groups with a primary focus on civil litigation and a particular interest in property litigation. Bob also works with Insurers with respect to both property claims and title insurance claims.
He has extensive experience with all civil litigation including construction matters, property disputes, real property and insurance. Bob has appeared before all levels of Court in Ontario. Bob prides himself on finding the solutions to problems in a unique and practical fashion and litigating only when all other avenues have been exhausted. Bob has been working with insurers providing insight and guidance on large and complex losses that involve multi-faceted claims including compromised structure, building replacement, loss of income and business interruption or loss of income and other nuanced insured losses. Bob has an unparalleled understanding of policies of insurance, the case law and legislation surrounding property and title insurance, as well as policies of commercial general liability and title insurance.
Bob advises both employers and employees in all aspects of the workplace law: hiring, terminations, drafting contracts and workplace policies and procedures, workplace investigations, and notice of termination or pay in lieu. Bob provides advice and representation of employees and employers in employment law matters.
Bob obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Windsor and a Bachelor of Laws degree from the University of Western Ontario. He was called to the bar in 2001 and has been at SV Law without interruption since his call.
Bob and his wife, Kate have three children (Bobby, Lily and Eloise) who keep them busy. Kate is a trained chef who, with Bob’s help, keeps a busy family and freelance career going. When not involved in cases or the office Bob can usually be found either eating something that Kate has devised or running and doing something for, or with, the kids. Bob’s love of fishing has taken him all over North America. He lives to be on the water and actually has a list of “bucket fish” to catch.
