Provincial Government Prepares to Expand Health Benefits Coverage for Ontario Workers

On September 27th, 2022, the Ontario government announced that it is seeking public feedback as it moves forward with plans to expand benefits including health, dental, prescription drugs, and vision care to Ontario workers who need coverage. Results from the government’s public survey will inform the design and implementation of a proposed health benefits plan. Implementation of the proposed plan will make Ontario the first province in Canada to cover precarious workers in sectors such as retail, the gig economy, and hospitality.

The Ontario government’s recent announcement advised that “most workers in Ontario with full-time, permanent jobs have medical insurance and dental coverage. In comparison, less than a quarter of those who work part-time or in precarious jobs have similar benefits…”. Accordingly, the proposed advisory panel is looking to ensure that more Ontario workers and their families have access to necessities. like dental care and affordable medication.

Public feedback is open until December 16th, 2022 and will help to determine the Portable Benefits Advisory Panel's recommendations, expected to be released in the summer of 2023. The survey is available on the government of Ontario’s website. Workers, employers, and those who are not currently working are all encouraged to provide input via the online survey.

If you’re interested in providing your feedback, fill out the survey here.
