The Role:

SV Law has an exciting opportunity for a Professional Resources Director to support our Guelph and Elora offices. Reporting to the Chief Administrative Officer, and as part of the Lawyer Human Resources Committee, the Professional Resources Director is responsible for, but not limited to, recruitment of associates, summer students and articling students, oversees continuing legal education fulfillment and implementation, source/review new legal software, reviewing dockets and ensuring proper billing processes are being followed, prepare/monitor annual training and budget and participate in various firm committees.

Responsibilities:

Recruitment & Onboarding

  • In concert with the Lawyer Human Resources Committee, responsible for the recruitment of lateral associates, summer students, and articling students.
  • Leads the facilitation of the new hire onboarding (orientation) program including software and firm policy and procedures
  • Ensures all resources are available for successful onboarding

Professional Development

  • Provides mentorship to lawyers and students
  • Oversees training and needs analysis for all new hires and current lawyers to ensure they fulfil their requirements for their continuing legal education hours.
  • Responsible for overseeing the design and implementation of the firm’s professional development curriculum, which focuses on skills-based learning and integrated business development programming to share knowledge and support sustainable practice growth

Knowledge Management

  • Working with Practice Group Chairs and the Technology Committee to source and/or review potential new legal software
  • Oversees the production and collection of annotated model precedents for the extensive precedents system used by professionals across the firm.

Practice Management Support

  • Reviewing dockets to ensure best practices are being followed.
  • Ensure proper billing practices are being followed and billing is done when appropriate.
  • Reviewing associate WIP and following up where necessary
  • Working with the Marketing & Communications Coordinator, to sources targeted strategic business development advice and support for practice and industry groups.

General Firm Support

  • Prepare and monitor annual training and development budget.
  • Completes special projects as required.
  • Participate on various firm committees as necessary.

Required Knowledge and Experience:

  • Lawyer 4-5 years of experience.
  • Interest in and providing professional development of others.
  • Exposure to a professional services environment.
  • Self-motivated, detail oriented, and able to work with deadlines.
  • Strong drive for results, sense of urgency, as well as flexibility.
  • High level of discretion, diplomacy, and a commitment to maintaining the highest level of confidentiality.

*This role is a hybrid of remote and in-office working arrangements.

Family Law – Associate Lawyer

Smith Valeriote Law Firm LLP (SV Law) is looking for a driven and talented individual to join its Family Law Practice Group. You will be exposed to a broad range of family matters, including collaborative law, mediation/arbitration, litigation at all levels of court, as well as drafting of pleadings, separation agreements, and marriage contracts/cohabitation agreements. We offer robust mentorship and the opportunity to work closely with multiple lawyers.

You would be one of 9 lawyers in our Family Law Practice Group: there are many opportunities for learning and development in a truly collegial practice.

Desired Skills & Experience

The successful candidate will be exposed to a broad range of matters, including corporate and tax reorganizations, asset purchases and sales; share purchases and sales; contract preparation; Trusts, commercial real estate, and (if desired) residential real estate and Wills and estates.

As an Associate you would perform administrative and management functions related to the practice of law; attend before courts of law; research legal precedents and gather evidence; draft legal documents and prepare legal opinion memos; and assist senior lawyers as necessary. This position offers opportunities for development and mentorship in a truly collegial practice. The ideal candidate has 1 to 5 years of experience practicing law and is confident taking the lead on files. An enthusiastic and responsive approach to client requirements and excellent people skills are assets.
