Founding Partner David Crawford Smith Retires After More Than 50 Years At SmithValeriote

With mixed emotions, we announce the retirement of founding partner, David Crawford Smith. We wish to congratulate David on an exceptional legal career and thank him for his tremendous leadership, mentorship, and dedication.

David founded SmithValeriote Law Firm LLP in 1966 with his law school classmate Paul Smith on a commitment to providing high-quality legal services. Over the next 51 years, he led our firm through steady growth, success, and unwavering support of the local community. We proudly continue to uphold this vision in everything that we do for our clients and our community.

“David is always considered by whomever he is dealing with, as a steady, calm and very competent lawyer,” said John Valeriote, David’s close friend of almost 50 years and firm partner of 17, in a recent interview. “All who know David consider him a very thoughtful and caring person, blessed with an underlying competitive spirit that serves him well. He is a good friend.”

Mentorship has always been a part of David’s work at SmithValeriote, which he has used to help guide and grow the firm’s leaders for future success.

“I would tell young lawyers to take whatever comes in the door because you don’t know where that case will take you,” said David. “Don’t turn somebody away because you don’t like the kind of problem they have.”

David and his wife Marie have four children, and ten grandchildren. When he is not busy with his family, he enjoys traveling, gardening, photography and playing golf. David, we wish you all the best in retirement. You will be missed!
